September 2019 was all about finding fun, free things to do.
After being over-budget on and off most of the summer, the last few weeks have been all about getting back on track.
One big part of that has been reigning in entertainment-related expenses.
Thankfully, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have fun. If you’re looking for some proof, here are some of the fun, free things we did in September.
Fun, free things we did in September 2019
When I think about the fun, free things we did in September 2019, there are four things that come to mind.
Hiked Signal Hill and Cape Spear
We spent the first week of September on vacation in Newfoundland.
This was our third trip to the Rock, but our first time visiting the St. John’s area. And no trip to St. John’s is complete without visiting Signal Hill and Cape Spear.
We spent a couple hours at each site, exploring the different features and taking in the view.
We could not have picked a better day for it. The weather was way better than what was in the forecast (I actually got a little bit of a sunburn) and even though it got really foggy by the time we made it to the lighthouse at Cape Spear, the rain held off.
We did end up picking up some items at the gift shop (Christmas gifts, primarily), but actually exploring these two beautiful sites cost us a grand total of zero dollars.
Astronomy Night
One cool thing about living in a university city is that there’s no shortage of interesting things to do. On September 13, Jeff and I went out to an astronomy night hosted by a group from one of the universities.
The event took place at a local ball field. Three telescopes were set up, manned by a group of guys who spent the hour moving them around to show those who came out different features of the night sky.
Of course, this was also the night of the Harvest Moon, which made it more challenging to see things, but we got a good look at Jupiter (and three of its moons), Saturn and, of course, the surface of the moon.
I don’t know a lot about space, but I found it really interesting! Plus, it was free. Can’t complain about that!
Exhibition hockey!
In September, we went to our first hockey game of the season — a pre-season matchup between local club and one of the university women’s team in our city.
We love women’s hockey. We watched a lot of university women’s hockey last season and it was awesome. The teams are so skilled and so competitive — it’s a lot of fun to watch.
The exhibition game we went to was free, but honestly, prices in the regular season are low to begin with. I’m really looking forward to the season!
Bonfire night with friends
After a hectic few weeks of traveling and getting back into the swing of things at work, it was lovely to sit around a fire with friends, enjoying some snacks and just hanging out. We arrived home later, bellies full of chili, smelling like campfire smoke and with only a couple new bug bites!
Is there a better way to mark the end of summer? I don’t think so.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to spend money to have fun. We found a lot of fun, free things to do in September. It was definitely a great way to end the summer.
What’s the best fun, free thing you’ve done lately?

That astronomy night sounds like so much fun! I took an intro to astronomy class in college just for fun because I’m so interested in it. I’m going to have to look up and see if there are any events like that around me!

It was a lot of fun! We both really enjoyed it. They do a few of them here throughout the year, so we will likely end up going to more in the future!
